You can take your bicycle on the train with you, but there are some rules for this. Following these helps to ensure a pleasant and responsible journey for everyone:
- One Bicycle per Person: You may take a maximum of one bicycle per person on the train.
- Time Restrictions: You can only take your bicycle on the train from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and from 6.30 pm to 6.30 am, and all day on the weekend.
- Public Holidays and Summer Months: On public holidays and during the months of July and August, you can also take your bicycle on the train all day long.
- Designated Bicycle Spaces: If there is room, you may put your bicycle only in the space on the train that is specially intended for bikes, and you must remove any baggage on your bicycle. This ensures everyone stays safe.
- No Designated Bicycle Space: If there is no designated bicycle space available on the Dutch train, then you may not take your bicycle with you. If this is the case, take the next train and follow the directions given by the NS staff.
- Types of Bikes Allowed: You can bring your regular bike, e-bike, racing bike, mountain bike, or unfolded folding bike on the train only during off-peak hours. Off-peak hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am, and all day on weekends and holidays. During July and August, bikes are allowed all day.
- Bicycle Ticket: A special bicycle ticket is required, which can be purchased online, at ticket machines, or through the NS app. The price for this ticket is approximately €7.50.
- Placing Bicycles: Bicycles must be placed in designated bicycle areas on the train, and you are not allowed to leave any luggage on them during the trip.
- Prohibited Items: Cargo bikes, children’s bicycle trailers, and handcarts are not permitted. Tandems and recumbents are allowed only if used as mobility aids for travelers with disabilities.
Remember to purchase a Fietskaart Dal (Off-peak bicycle ticket), as you need to have a ticket for your bicycle too.
